This show from September 16, 1990, the second night of a six-show Madison Square Garden run, catches the Dead in a period of transition. Brent Mydland had passed away less than two months earlier and former Tubes keyboardist Vince Welnick had made his Dead debut a mere 9 days before this show. In addition, pianist Bruce Hornsby began his tenure as a semi-regular member the very night before. As you might expect with all of the new blood, the band sounds a bit tentative feeling each other out, but when they are comfortable, they cook. Welnick is still finding his way through the songs and experimenting with often-harsh sonic textures, though for some reason he remains prominent in the mix (and you thought it was just your seats!). Hornsby, however, is the real star of this show, blending in beautifully and tastefully on acoustic piano and bringing out the stateliness in many of the Dead's tunes. Hornsby finds the ragtime in "Tennessee Jed," lends firepower to "Samson and Delilah" and "I Need a Miracle," and spruces up a number of spontaneous creations. Jerry Garcia clearly feeds off Hornsby's playing and responds energetically. Unfortunately, their little musical love affair didn't last very long, as Hornsby's appearances became more sporadic until he left for good in the spring of 1992. This document makes you wish their partnership had gone further. --Marc Greilsamer

At the height of his financial troubles, Burt Reynolds took just about any acting job that came along. Some were critically acclaimed projects like Boogie Nights. And some were like Raven. Burt is the title character, the leader of a special ops team who discovers the decoder he was sent to recover is slated to be sold to U.S. enemies, for the personal enrichment of some top CIA officials. He decides to sell the decoder himself while killing the men who betrayed him, but his former brother-in-arms sets out to stop him. Burt's smart: if you're going to do a low-budget, cookie-cutter, action flick like this, play the villain. It's a whole lot more fun. Even so, he seems to be holding back. He did five films in 1997, the year Raven came out, so maybe he was just tired, but the trademark boyish grin lacks its usual gleam. Director Russell Solberg is a stuntman who's worked on such films as Tombstone and Die Hard, so at least the action scenes are pretty good. --Geof Miller

A bittersweet film about an Irish immigrant working as a mid-level prostitute in Manhattan, Claire Dolan tells a darkly intriguing story that is less about sex than trying to attain love. Dolan--portrayed with subtle melancholy by Katrin Cartlidge (who died in 2002 from complications of pneumonia and blood poisoning)--is too pragmatic to think she could ever fall in love with one of her clients. They are merely business transactions. What she wants is to have the unconditional love of having her own baby. When she meets a quiet cabbie (Vincent D'Onofrio), it's apparent that despite what they say to each other, their troubled relationship is based on desperation, not love. Director Lodge Kerrigan offers sparing insight into Dolan's past, just enough to make you concerned about her uncertain future. He doesn't try to make the characters understand whether they can accept each other, and he vehemently refuses to reassure his audience that everything will be all right. For moviegoers who have been conditioned by happy Hollywood endings, this can be a little unsettling. But that uncertainty--as in real life--is part of the beauty of this understated drama. --Jae-Ha Kim
